The thermodynamics laboratory of mechanical engineering department offers a variety of experiments for undergraduate students. What follows is a brief description of each available experiment.

 

Marcet Boiler

 

 

Objectives:

  • Examining the relation between saturated pressure and temperature at the equilibrium state in a specified pressure range
  • Verifying the Clapeyron relation
  • Investigation of entropy-enthalpy variation in the two-phase region

 

Condenser

 

 

Objectives:

  • Investigating the performance of a condenser
  • Examining the relation between volumetric flow rate of hot and cold fluids

 

Measurement of Steam Quality

 

 

Objectives:

  • Practicing various methods for separation of steam and water
  • Measurement of vapor quality

 

Steam Power Plant

 

Objective:

  • Introducing the main parts of a steam power plant and evaluating its efficiency

 

Thermo-electric Device

 

 

Objectives:

  • Introduction to direct methods for production of electric power
  • Comparison between the efficiency of direct methods and Carnot cycle

 

Compressor

 

 

Objectives:

  • Investigating the characteristics of a reciprocating compressor
  • Studying the effect of intercooling on the efficiency of a reciprocating compressor

 

Gas Turbine

 

 

Objectives:

  • Introducing a gas turbine power-plant and its main parts
  • Evaluating the efficiency of  gas turbine

 

Ramjet Engine

 

 

Objectives:

  • Studying the compressible flow behavior in a ramjet engine
  • Investigation of the thrust force in ramjet engines

 

Heat Pump

 

 

Objectives:

  • Introducing a heat pump and its main parts
  • Computing the COP of a heat pump
  • Examining the effect of different parameters on the COP of a heat pump
  • Studying the actual cycle on the thermodynamics charts and comparing it with the ideal cycle of a heat pump
